With the enactment of the North East
Frontier Agency, Panchayat Raj Act 1967, the ground for the
Legislative Assembly of Arunachal Pradesh was prepared. This Act
introduced a three-tier system viz, Gram Panchayat at the village
level, Anchal Samiti at the Block level and Zila Parishad at the
District level. An Apex Advisory Body known as the Agency Council
with the Governor of Assam as its Chairman, came into being on the
29th December, 1969, Members of Agency Council were elected by the
members of Zila Parishad.
A step further in the direction was
taken with the enactment of North East Frontier Agency
(Administration) Supplementary Regulation, 1971 which provided for
replacement of the Agency Council by Pradesh Council and appointment
of five Councilors, one from each district, who were in-charge of
variuos development departments. This paved the way for attainment
of an Union Territory on the 20th January, 1972 and the Pradesh
Council was converted into Provisional Legislative Assembly of the
Union Territory of Arunachal Pradesh with the members of the Pradesh
Council as members of Provisional Legislative Assembly and five
Councilors as Ministers which was formally inaugurated on the 15th
Arunachal Pradesh Legislature has a unicameral House
ever since its inception. Initially, the Legislative Assembly
consisted of 33 members out of them 30 were chosen by the people by
direct election and three were nominated by the Union Government.
The first General Election was held in Arunachal Pradesh in 1978.
The second General Election was held in January, 1980 and the third
General Election of Legislative Assembly was held simultaneously
with the General Election for the Eighth Lok Sabha in December,
1984. The Union Territory of Arunachal Pradesh became full-fledged
state with effect from 20th February, 1987. On the persistence of
the people of the State, the total membership in the Legislative
Assembly was raised to sixty during the General Election in 1990 and
thus, the First Legislative Assembly of the state of Arunachal
Pradesh was constituted.
Election for Second Legislative Assembly of Arunachal pradesh was
held in March , 1995. Fourth Legislative Assembly was held in
October ,2014 and Fifth Legislative Assembly election was held in
Election for the Sixth Legislative Assembly was held on 9th April,
2014 and Assembly was constituted on 16th may, 2014 on the declaration ofthe
results of the Election.The first Session on the Sixth Legislative Assembly commenced From 30th May,2014.
